CLAIRE'S PORTFOLIO
Project #5
The inspiration of this piece is the feeling of feeling that all you'll ever be in society is a woman, and that none of the other values will be seen since it will be covered by a wall of femininity. I find myself feeling with way often, and wanted to portray my love for being a woman, but also the pain of knowing that sometimes, it prevents me from being seen for what I truly am.
It took a lot of time, but all my progress on the woman was done on one layer. I used block shading, which means that I used one base color to block out the silhouette of the woman, and then I chose about three other colors to do most of the shading.
I added my background here, where the woman is submerged in water. I also added a glow dodge layer on top of that to add lighting to the woman.
The final piece is 2350px by 1470px. This piece relates to my inquiry question through the feeling of loving your feminity as a woman, but under a capatilistic society, feminity is also a weapon against oneself, and can close many doors and cause much pain to the woman. I portrayed that feeling by having the woman holding a a pink lily, which often represents feminity, and her holding it close to her chest to portray her acceptance and love for the flower. However, on her lower abdomen, a flower is sprouting and causing her to bleed, representing the pain and damage that her feminity can cause in a capatalistic society.
I did this piece digitally primarily because I wanted to experiment with block shading, since it's not a method I am familiar with and wanted to get better at it. I believe I got better at the style, but I still need to practice. Doing this piece digitally also helped me portay my colors in a more vibrant way.
